Floor Systems FAQ’s
Terra Nova Trusses offers a variety of products that make up your pre-engineered floor system. These include joist hangers, structural wood screws, Wood I, floor trusses, rim board, and LVL. All these elements work together to encompass your floor system.
It allows for quick installation since it weighs less than traditional lumber. It is cost-effective as long lengths enable ceilings and floors to be designed with fewer pieces. Furthermore, it provides peace of mind as it is less likely to split, shrink, twist, warp, or bow.
The design is durable, featuring a larger nailing area and increased stability. Sustainability is another advantage as the wood is sourced through programs certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative®.
Wood I or I-Joists are some of the most commonly used engineered wood products (EWP) for framing floors and roofs. They are lightweight and easy to install in residential, multi-residential, and commercial projects.
Consistency in manufacturing and performance, along with proper design, helps reduce vibration, resulting in less bounce and fewer squeaks for solid, quiet floors.
Floor trusses are another essential component. Terra Nova Trusses has designed and built floor trusses to meet customer requirements for better room placements without inconvenient support posts or bearing walls.
The open web design of floor trusses provides valuable floor cavity space for plumbing, electrical, and ventilation systems. With proper planning, this can eliminate the need for unsightly bulkheads and costly drop ceilings, preserving your overall ceiling height.
Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL), comprises multiple layers of thin wood assembled with adhesives. It is commonly used to span openings within your floor system.
LVL is pre-engineered for bearing and point loads and typically comes in one, two, or three-ply. It offers several advantages over typical milled lumber as it is made in a factory under controlled specifications.
Is an integral part of the framing package. It is precision cut to match the depths of Wood I/ I-Joists and is manufactured in lengths of 12′ and 16′, making installation faster by reducing joining.
It is pre-cut, eliminating the inaccuracies and time involved in ripping plywood trim. Some municipalities require the use of rim board and will not allow plywood with a pre-engineered floor system.
All components that make up your floor system are held in stock at our manufacturing facility in Mt. Pearl. Once the design is finalized and the delivery schedule is arranged, you can have your components in as little as 48 hours.
